Misrepresentations on mortgage applications have inched up nationwide for the first time since July, thanks in part to trends in the energy and agricultural sectors which are creating pressure in the South, according to First American Financial Corp. The Santa Ana, Calif.-based title insurer's Loan Application Defect Index increased 1.3% from the previous month in March to 76, the first monthly increase since July. The figure nonetheless remained 2.6% down from a year ago. Comment?

The monitor of the Bank of America Mortgage Settlement distributed roughly $89 million Tuesday to legal assistance groups in nine states from a fund for federal tax assistance. The distributions were made to groups in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Washington, Arizona, Virginia, Missouri, New Jersey and Oregon, according to a press release from the settlement's monitor, Eric Green. While the percentage of properties with negative equity decreased during 2015, the lowest-priced homes continued to struggle to regain value, according to Black Knight Financial Services. The number of underwater borrowers dropped by 31%, or 1.5 million homeowners, but there are still a total of 3.2 million borrowers in negative equity positions, representing $126 billion in underwater first- and second-lien housing debt, Black Knight said in its year-to-year Mortgage Monitor Report for February.
