Chairman Norman E. Beatty announced his retirement from the First Hope Bank Board of Directors, at the annual shareholders meeting May 24. Shareholders re-elected Directors Daniel G. Beatty and Lewis R. Beatty to three-year terms. Lewis Beatty was selected to be chairman of the board, Daniel Beatty was selected vice chairman and, as of June 1, Donald Somma was selected to be bank president and CEO. Comment?

Hal Maxwell, president of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in New Jersey and Rockland County, NY, has named Glen Huntley branch vice president of the company's Chester office. A Hackettstown roofing company is now accepting applications as part of a nationwide program that provides free roofs to community members in need. Jeff Alte Jr. Roofing is taking nominations from Sussex, Warren and Morris counties for the No Roof Left Behind campaign from now until May 31. He said the campaign is a way to give back to the community that has brought them success for more than 15 years. Comment?

New Jersey vacation rentals booked through online services such as Airbnb would be subject to the same state and local occupancy taxes as hotel and motel rooms under a bill introduced in state Assembly. Assemblywomen Valerie Vainieri Huttle, D-Englewood, and Annette Quijano, D-Union, have co-sponsored the measure, which would impose on these rentals a 7 percent sales tax, a 5 percent occupancy fee and up to a 6 percent municipal occupancy tax - the same as motels and hotel pay. New Jersey continues to lead the country in foreclosures despite a national trend showing many states recovering to pre-recession numbers. Nationwide, properties starting the foreclosure process during the first half of 2016 were down 17 percent from the same time last year , the lowest figures recorded since 2006, according to data recently released by RealtyTrac. Mortgage rates have sunk again to near rock-bottom lows, thanks to the economic uncertainty caused by United Kingdom's recent decision to leave the European Union, spurring a surge in refinance applications. Mortgage giant Freddie Mac said Thursday the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 3.42 percent, a little more than a tenth of a percentage point above the record low of 3.31 percent in November 2012.
