The local housing market is as hot as it's ever been with sales in Benton County alone expected to top $1 billion before the end of the year, according to Paul Bynum, economist and founder of MountData.com. Agents across Benton and Washington counties sold 741 homes in September, cumulatively valued at $146.914 million, up compared to 633 homes worth $119.793 million, a year ago. Comment?

It wasn't that long ago when a third of Northwest Arkansas homeowners were chained to mortgages valued well above what their homes were worth. But prices have rebounded in Benton and Washington counties in the past two years and there are fewer vacant homes deemed underwater and less overall foreclosures, according to Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac.com. Using the absorption rate from the past 12 months implies that there is a 53.4 month supply of remaining lots in active subdivisions in Northwest Arkansas, the lowest level since 2008. The recent Skyline Report conducted by the University of Arkansas Center for Business and Economic Research found there were 27,850 lots available in the 381 active subdivisions identified by Skyline Report researchers in the first half of 2015. Eight Arkansas cities included in the Arkansas Tech Business Index had above-average economic activity ratings during the year's second quarter. Arkansas Tech said in a statement that Bentonville, Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Fort Smith, Conway, Hot Springs and Mountain Home each finished the quarter with a 100 or greater rating, which is above the state average since 2009. The Arkansas Teacher Retirement System's investments dropped by $872 million in value to $14.1 billion last quarter largely due to a downturn in stock markets, the system's investment consultant reported.
