New foreclosure filings have begun to level off in New York but remain higher than they were prior to the housing crisis, according to a report Monday from the state Comptroller's Office. There were 43,868 new foreclosure cases filed last year in New York courts, down from 46,696 the previous year, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli's office found. Comment?

Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced today that former New York State Assembly Speaker SHELDON SILVER was sentenced this afternoon to 12 years in prison after having been found guilty by a federal jury of using his official position to obtain nearly $4 million in bribes and kickbacks in exchange for his official acts and obtaining another $1 million through laundering the proceeds of his crimes. SILVER was sentenced in Manhattan federal court by U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni who also presided over the five-week jury trial. Comment?

The New York State Attorney General announced a change in condominium offering rules today that will make it easier for developers to pitch homes away from home to New Yorkers. The change, called Cooperative Policy Statement-12 , will allow some out-of-state developers to skip parts of the offering plan review process - required in order to advertise or sell condos in New York - if the process in their home state is deemed to be adequate. A 12-year-old Perth boy accused of murder has again been remanded in custody after his lawyers failed to prove to the Children's Court that his 22-year-old brother could properly supervise him if he was released. The boy and seven others are alleged to have murdered 26-year-old Patrick Slater at the Esplanade train station after Australia Day celebrations in January. Comment?

The Halifax says it is responding to the growth in Britain's ageing population by raising its upper limit for mortgages from 75 to 80. The bank announced the move in a week of renewed debate about lending practices after Barclays said it had launched a 100% mortgage - the first time such a product has been widely available since the financial crisis. The Halifax - part of the country's biggest lender Lloyds Banking Group - had earlier released the findings of its own research that suggested one in three 20 to 45-year-olds expect to be working beyond their retirement age to pay off their mortgage.
