Ropack, a Montreal-based pharmaceutical company, seeks tax breaks of more than $3 million as it plans to purchase two Forest Laboratories' facilities on Long Island. Ropack applied with the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday for a sales tax exemption, mortgage recording tax exemption and a 15 year PILOT tax abatement, starting at 50 percent for year one and decreasing by 3 percent per year for the balance of the 15 year term, totally $3.4 million in property tax savings. The Town of Brookhaven has approved a measure to charge banks a $100 inspection fee to help cover the cost of verifying that homes have been abandoned. The move was made official at last week's board meeting in a 7-0 decision. Comment?

Brookhaven wants to charge banks a $100 inspection fee to help cover the cost of verifying that homes have been abandoned as well as help Suffolk County to speed up its foreclosure process. "It will be revenue to the town and will help us cover the costs of the work we're doing," Brookhaven Town Attorney Annette Eaderesto said Monday in a town board work session meeting. Comment?

Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today joined representatives from Bank of America and Citi to announce commitments by both companies to finance the construction or rehabilitation of more than 2,300 affordable housing rental units in New York City. The financial commitments, which arise out of the multi-million dollar settlements the Attorney General announced last summer, are aimed at helping New Yorkers that were hardest hit by the 2008 housing crash. This week I had the occasion to see the new Ketch roundabout for the first time and I was appalled to notice that part of it was built around the electricity pylon near the Ketch. Then, as we got on to the new A4440 dual carriage road going north towards the M5 , there was a road sign with 60 on it, being two lanes, but it then reduced to one lane before the next roundabout, and my son, who was driving, remarked that it was an accident waiting to happen.
