The Maui County Department of Planning has levied a $500,000 fine against the owner and operator of three vacation rentals for a variety of violations. The fines result from some 30 notices of violations of short-term rental home, special management area, zoning and building codes laws. Comment?

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai'i - Upon an agreement by the Mayor and the County Council, the Department of Planning has levied fines totaling half a million dollars against Michael Baskin, the owner and operator of three vacation rentals in Paia. This is the largest fine in the history of the department, resulting from numerous violations of the Short Term Rental Home, SMA, zoning, and building codes laws. Comment?

Sales of single-family homes in Maui County soared 20 percent in March as prices for both single-family homes and condominiums rose by more than 5 percent, according to statistics from the Realtors Association of Maui . The median price of a single-family home in Maui County last month was $627,500, which was 6 percent higher than the median price in March 2014, which was $590,500. Comment?

Big changes are coming to Hawaii County's flood zone maps following a multi-year effort by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency to update the maps to better reflect flood risk. The maps are used to help set flood insurance rates as well as assist the government in making land use and development decisions. Comment?

Established in September 2009, Hawaii Island's Foreclosure Mediation Program has so far helped 172 homeowners to stay in their homes. The program began as residents statewide were wrestling with a "catastrophic foreclosure crisis" during the depths of the recession, according to the state Judiciary. Comment?

The Big Island saw a big year-over-year spike in home sales volume last month, compared to a year ago, as prices stayed fairly stable. The 196 single-family homes sold in May were up 20 percent from the 163 sold a year earlier, according to Hawaii Information Service. Comment?

In Vermont and six other states - Oklahoma, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, North Dakota and Georgia - taxpayers who itemize their deductions are allowed to deduct what they paid in state and local taxes on their state income tax returns, just as they can on their federal tax returns. But since the starting point for state income tax calculations usually is the lower federal adjusted income that already takes the deduction into account, taxpayers in those states get the extra benefit of essentially deducting their state and local taxes twice.
