April 08--Derry Township supervisors are interested in purchasing the former Eastern Derry Township Volunteer Fire Department property along Route 217 in hopes of restoring a second active fire department within the municipality. The former Eastern Derry headquarters is one of more than 100 properties listed for the county's May 4 sheriff sale, and supervisors chairman Vince DeCario said the supervisors have been in discussions with the township's solicitor about trying to buy the property. 31 comments

After receiving a $233,386 grant from Westmoreland County, the Mon Valley Initiative will use that money to help Monessen families become homeowners. The grant money will provide down payment and closing cost assistance to up to 20 low- to moderate-income individuals and families in an effort to stabilize the housing stock and to provide affordable homeownership opportunities in the City of Monessen. Home prices nationally are now within 3 percent of the peak they reached in March 2007. The Federal Housing Finance Agency released its purchase only Home Price Index for February showing that home prices increased 0.7 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis compared to January and were 5.4 percent higher than in February 2014. Only about 1 in 4 former homeowners who lost property during the housing crash will soon become buyers again as tight credit keeps many out of the U.S. real estate market, according to a National Association of Realtors study.
