In a spectacular failure, a Florida company is foreclosing on Utah-based MonaVie Inc. after the marketer of nutritional fruit juice and personal care products defaulted on a $182 million note. But a South Dakota Bank has gone to court to seek a halt to the foreclosure while it sorts out what happened to the once high-flying company. Comment?

Larry Pressler, who is running for Senate in South Dakota as an independent, has his principal residence in Washington, according to District of Columbia tax records. Pressler, who served as a Republican in Congress from 1975 to 1997, and his wife receive the homestead deduction, a generous tax break meant for people who use their D.C. home as their "principal residence," according to the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue. Comment?

Lower crude prices are expected to help contribute to a split in the Canadian housing market that will see oil-producing provinces slow but others gain ground, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said Monday. The federal agency predicted the overall pace of housing starts will slow slightly this year and next, but that there would be regional differences. Comment?

A Buffalo, N.Y., landlord who agreed to pay $1.5 million in restitution and penalties and plead guilty to mortgage fraud has been sentenced to one year in prison. Robert J. Palano, described by the Buffalo News as one of the city's "biggest and most notorious landlords," had faced up to seven years in prison after fraudulently obtaining more than $4 million in mortgage loans on 104 rental properties on the city's east side. Leading Spanish social activist Ada Colau said Monday the fight against evictions, poverty and corruption will be her priority as new mayor of the country's second city, Barcelona. Colau, 41, told a news conference she intends to halt evictions of people who can't afford to pay their mortgage or rent and will demand that banks free up the thousands of empty houses they possess.
