Heartland Financial USA, Inc. announced today that it has completed its acquisition of Community Bancorporation of New Mexico, Inc., parent company of Community Bank in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At the close of business on August 21, 2015, Community Bancorporation was merged into Heartland, and Community Bank was merged into New Mexico Bank & Trust, Heartland's New Mexico bank subsidiary. Anyone who owns real estate in New Mexico could be affected by an effort underway by New Mexico's Real Estate Association to try to place a state constitutional ban on real estate transfer taxes. The association commissioned the American Directions Research Group to conduct a phone survey this month to determine if New Mexicans would support a ban. Comment?

Nusenda Credit Union, the largest credit union in New Mexico with more than 150,000 members, has entered into a promotional partnership with Heritage Hotels & Resorts - the largest independently owned hotel chain in the state. This started me thinking about the U.S. political neophytes who try to explain economic realities in terms of both the direct, and inverse aspects of Robin Hood: The problem is that both polarities are simplistic and fail to address the very real needs and responsibilities of both citizens and government in a democracy.
