Buyers who use down payment assistance programs are saving an average of $17,766 over the life of the loan, according to a report released Thursday by RealtyTrac , a source for comprehensive housing data, and Down Payment Resource , a web-based software company with a mission to connect people with hard-to-find financial resources. The report analyzed the impact of down payment assistance programs on the cost of buying a home, including the down payment and monthly house payments for a median-priced home in 513 counties nationwide. Hawaii lawmakers have made changes to a controversial bill aimed at simplifying tax collections for vacation rentals to prevent the operations from being run illegally. The legislation as it stands would let online lodging service Airbnb and similar companies collect general excise and transient accommodation taxes on behalf of hosts and pay the money to the state, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported . One in four Hawaii residents are satisfied with "the availability of good, affordable housing" where they live, half as many as in the next lowest states -- California, New York and Vermont, all with 50% satisfaction. It seemed to me that Hawaii - over my 18-year romance with the rainbow state - would always remain the same laid back, peaceful and slow-moving paradise it has always been. However, on my recent business trip to Honolulu I got a whole new perspective: Hawaiians are recalibrating their Asia strategy by moving China to the top of their to-do-business-with list. Comment?

British Columbia's real estate industry no longer deserves the privilege of self-regulation and will have that authority stripped away, Premier Christy Clark announced after a damning report concluded the sector had lost the public trust.
