The median price of a single family home rose 14.1 percent in November in Maui County, while condo prices rose 4.6 percent despite a 29 percent drop in sales, according to statistics from the Realtors Association of Maui . The median price of a single family home in November was $587,500, compared to $515,000 in November 2013. Comment?

Maui home prices looked like they were on fire in September based on a report released Thursday, though property values are likely more subdued than the report suggests. The Realtors Association of Maui published data for home sales last month showing the median sale price for condominiums soared 35 percent to $465,000 from $345,000 a year earlier. Comment?

A U.S. Census report last week put Maui County's estimated population at 160,195 for 2013, up 3 percent from 2010, and offered a socio-economic view of Maui County residents. The economic data in the "American Community Survey" for 2013 showed that 5.4 percent of Maui County families were below the poverty line, a 3.2 percentage point decline from 2012; that median household income adjusted for inflation was $65,558, up about 6 percent from 2011 and 2012; and that 44 percent of property owners and 38 percent of renters put 35 percent or more of their family incomes to mortgages and rent respectively. Home prices and sales in Maui County fell across the board in August, according to figures released Wednesday by the Realtors Association of Maui . The median price for a single-family home in August was $570,000, a 2.5 percent decline from $585,000 in August 2013. Comment?

The Hawaii Insurance Division continues to monitor the lava flow situation in the state as Commissioner Gordon Ito delivered testimony Nov. 19 to a U.S. House subcommittee, saying federal government assistance will help to mitigate the impact and possible long-term effects from the lava flow. Ito told the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources during an oversight hearing on volcano hazards that his division's greatest area of concern at this time is the nonrenewal of policies in affected areas. Waianae is the most affordable housing market in Hawaii, while Kapolei is the most expensive, according to a report from Coldwell Banker Real Estate , but the state's lack of inventory kept wealthier Hawaii areas out of the study. A draft plan by the state Department of Health is raising a stink among local real estate agents and builders who say proposed rules requiring that septic tank systems replace cesspools could add $10,000 to the price of a new home and make buying and selling existing homes less affordable. The proposed rules are just part of a 115-page draft water quality plan that also includes new water quality monitoring initiatives, reducing unpermitted underground injection wells, prioritizing impaired watersheds for restoration and completing guidelines for treatment and reuse of recycled water. The number of home owners moving house reached a seven-year high in 2014 as rising property values boosted the amount of cash they had sitting in their existing homes, a report has found.
