The county sent notices to 320 people operating vacation rental, bed and breakfast and homestay businesses without proper permits, The Garden Island newspaper in Lihue reported. The alleged violators were identified from a list of 4,000 vacation rentals on Kauai, said Michael Dahilig, the county's planning director. Comment?

The Big Island saw a big year-over-year spike in home sales volume last month, compared to a year ago, as prices stayed fairly stable. The 196 single-family homes sold in May were up 20 percent from the 163 sold a year earlier, according to Hawaii Information Service. Comment?

In Vermont and six other states - Oklahoma, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, North Dakota and Georgia - taxpayers who itemize their deductions are allowed to deduct what they paid in state and local taxes on their state income tax returns, just as they can on their federal tax returns. But since the starting point for state income tax calculations usually is the lower federal adjusted income that already takes the deduction into account, taxpayers in those states get the extra benefit of essentially deducting their state and local taxes twice. Hawaii's Prudential Advantage Realty said Tuesday that the firm has changed its name as it becomes the first Hawaii residential real estate firm to join the Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate brand. The Honolulu residential real estate company, which is now called Better Homes and Gardens Advantage Realty, will continue to be led by broker and owner Myron Kiriu , is now the company's CEO.
