Speaker Philip Gunn took a campaign finance bill by the hand and escorted it through the Mississippi House Wednesday, a year after his top lieutenants mugged a similar measure. Representatives voted 102-13 to pass House Bill 479 and send it to the Senate for more work. Comment?

A federal judge on Wednesday rejected an attempt by former Mississippi lawmaker Cecil McCrory to withdraw his guilty plea in a prison contracting bribery case. U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate ruled Wednesday that McCrory's request to undo his February 2015 plea didn't meet the legal standard, rejecting claims that the Brandon man hadn't been properly assisted by his first lawyer and had felt pressured by prosecutors to plead quickly. Pat Robertson, executive director of the Mississippi Public Employees' Retirement System , tells legislators and retirees to think of PERS' massive $16.8 billion funding shortfall as a mortgage: "Having an unfunded liability is analogous to having a mortgage and making mortgage payments faithfully every month." Federal Reserve officials are likely to keep interest rates steady at their policy meeting this week and drill down into details about when and how to reduce their large holdings of mortgage and Treasury securities. The challenge in their postmeeting policy statement will be to acknowledge the handful of disappointing economic growth indicators since officials last gathered in mid-March without suggesting they are ready to veer from the policy path they have sketched out at recent meetings.
