The city of Wallins has been a city in name only for years, and now a petition has been filed with the Harlan Circuit Court to dissolve the city. An order was filed by Harlan Circuit Court Judge Kent Hendrickson on Dec. 4 setting a hearing in the matter on Jan. 8. According to the order, the petitioner, Tony Felosi, seeks the dissolution of the city of Wallins on the grounds that Wallins has failed to maintain a city government, ceased to have officers either appointed or elected and stopped the levying and collection of taxes. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today announced that Ohio has joined a $470 million joint state-federal settlement with mortgage lender and servicer HSBC to address mortgage origination, servicing, and foreclosure abuses. The settlement provides direct payments to nearly 20,000 borrowers nationwide for past foreclosure abuses, loan modifications and other relief for borrowers in need of assistance, rigorous mortgage servicing standards, and grants oversight authority to an independent monitor. New Hampshire is part of a $470 million multi-state settlement with banking giant HSBC over mortgage lending and foreclosure abuses. The Justice Department says the agreement requires the bank to pay $100 million to the federal government and to an escrow fund administered by the states to make payments to borrowers who lost their homes to foreclosure between 2008 and 2012.
