Whitey and Wilma Brashler would approve of the recent changes at the old home in which they raised their family at 138 Alger St. SE, says neighbor Tyrone Wilkins. Wilkins, who has lived next door to the old Brashler house for the past 20 years, watched sadly several years ago as it fell into disrepair, then into tax foreclosure and was taken over by the Kent County Land Bank. A criminal charge has been dismissed against an elected official in the Grand Rapids area who was accused of stealing more than $20,000 in a real estate deal. A Kent County judge scratched a larceny-by-conversion charge Friday against Jay Spencer, who is the supervisor in Plainfield Township. Comment?

First-time home buyers can get up to $7,500 toward a down payment and closing costs, thanks to a couple of programs offered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The MI First Home program also is available to past homeowners who lost their homes to foreclosure and have restored their credit for at least three years, according to Mary Townley, MSHDA's director of homeownership. The surge of homeless schoolchildren in Kent and Ottawa counties to more than 4,000 is driven by unemployment, family dysfunction, foreclosures, rejection of sexual orientation, and unaffordable housing, according to educators and advocates. In 2014-15, the number of students without stable housing enrolled in local schools, including charters, was 4,128, up from 3,325 in 2013-14, according to data submitted to the state. Comment?

After cratering during the recent recession, Michigan housing prices are continuing to rebound but are still below the pre-recession peak, according to data from the Michigan Realtors association. The average housing price was $138,801 during the first four months of 2016, up 3 percent compared to the same time period in 2015, while the number of sales were up 8 percent. Comment?

The U.S. housing market accelerated to its fastest pace on record in May, according to Redfin , the next-generation real estate brokerage. The typical home went under contract in 42 days, a full week faster than a year earlier, and the lowest median days on market reported since Redfin began tracking this metric in 2009. Comment?

Monthly May data included a decline in the Index of Leading Indicators, due mainly to a brief jump in initial unemployment claims and a decline in durable goods orders, but a new post-recession record high in existing home sales, and a monthly decline in new home sales from their post-recession highs to the second highest post-recession reading. My usual note: I look at the high frequency weekly indicators because while they can be very noisy, they provide a good Now-cast of the economy, and will telegraph the maintenance or change in the economy well before monthly or quarterly data is available.
