Jefferson was ranked one of the top counties statewide in a recent study showing where buying a home was considered more viable than renting. According to the SmartAsset's third annual study comparing the average rent to home prices in counties nationwide, Jefferson County was ranked eighth in the state with a break-even point of 1.4 years when the cost of rent becomes greater than the cost of purchasing a home, with an average home price of $222,146, an average monthly mortgage of $558 and an average monthly rent of $1,492. Tax-exempt revenue bonds totaling $36 million are expected to be issued to help Clarkson University finance upgrades to the admissions building, Cheel Arena and other campus facilities on the university's Hill Campus. The bonds will be issued through St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency's Civic Development Corp., which has authority to issue bonds for not-for-profit institutions such as universities and hospitals, said IDA Director Patrick J. Kelly. Comment?

A local businessman is renovating a century-old downtown building that he purchased at the last St. Lawrence County foreclosure auction, with hopes of reopening it as a hardware store. Clark A.
