8 min ago | via The Daily Advance

The awarding of Amazon's second headquarters to two affluent localities has fanned intense speculation around a key question: For the winning cities, will the economic payoff prove to be worth the cost? Amazon's decision will bring to Arlington, Virginia, and the Long Island City section of New York a combined 50,000 jobs and $5 billion in investment over the next two decades. But the influx is sure to swell already-high home prices and apartment rents and could overwhelm public transportation systems.

  • Bill would wipe out student loan debt for homebuyers

    40 min ago | via Tribune-Chronicle

A new bill introduced in the Ohio Senate would encourage college and vocational school graduates to stay in the state by tying the elimination of student loan debt to buying a home for the first time, according to a Boardman lawmaker. Senate Bill 334, introduced Tuesday by outgoing, term-limited state Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D- Boardman, would help an estimated 400 low- to middle-income homebuyers with outstanding student debt from a college, university, vocational school or other post-secondary educational institution eliminate up to the full amount of the debt through the purchase of a home.

  • Frydenberg's $2b plan is a solution searching for a ...

1 hr ago | via Sydney Morning Herald

Is Josh Frydenberg's proposed $2 billion securitisation fund for loans to small and medium-sized business a solution to a problem or a solution in search of a problem? And is it conceivable that the "solution" - a government fund that would buy packages of securitised SME loans - might actually create problems? The proposed Australian Business Securitisation Fund would invest the $2 billion in the "warehouse" facilities which fund the special purpose vehicles in which loans are collected and pooled for securitisation before being on-sold, as portfolios rather than as individual risks, to investors. It will also invest in the asset-backed securities themselves.
