The Humboldt Mobilehome Owners Coalition has submitted 5,000 signatures to the county in an effort to pass a rent stabilization ordinance exclusive to mobile home residents in unincorporated areas. “I'm also paying a mortgage on my house, in addition to paying rent for the dirt it sits on,” Mosher said. The Trinidad City Council is set to discuss at its June 8 meeting whether to extend its moratorium on new vacation rental units to June 2017. According to the city's staff report, the proportion of Trinidad homes used for short-term vacation rentals has increased from 5 percent in 2000 to about 18 percent in 2014. Comment?

The Eureka Planning Commission during their Monday evening meeting weighed in on a change in vacation rentals policy, but put off until May further discussion of food truck rules. The commission voted unanimously to approve wording of a vacation dwelling unit text and local coastal program amendments that will be submitted to the City Council for approval. Comment?

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors initiated the first steps in nearly 20 years on Feb. 9 to set regulations for vacation rentals. As online commerce has led to a growth in local vacation rentals, several vacation rental operators voiced support for the proposed regulations as it would bring them into compliance with county law and expand the scope of the industry.
