It might seem a little odd that this bottom line doesn't feature in the "four key findings that translate into 12 practical recommendations" listed in committee chair Kelly O'Dwyer's introduction to the report, but followers of Yes, Minister - the British documentary series on the nature of government - would not be surprised.

    The Australian government Thursday issued a number of recommendations aimed at tightening regulation around the rules for foreign purchases of houses and apartments. The House of Representatives Economics Committee on Foreign Investment in Residential Real Estate made 12 recommendations for change, including stiffer penalties for anybody found to be breaching current restrictions, amendments to migration laws and providing better resources for the country's foreign-investment watchdog.

    The International Monetary Fund issued a warning Wednesday that a hot housing market and mounting household debt represent key domestic risks to Canada's economic growth. But in releasing its latest report card for Canada, the IMF predicted a soft landing for the housing market and described the economy's performance as relatively stable in the global context, thanks to an improving export sector and stronger U.S. growth.
