The Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay has notified all 82 employees that they will be laid off effective Oct. 31. The Spokane-based chain says it hopes to reopen a new hotel on the site as part of the Port of Vancouver's Terminal 1 redevelopment. Negotiations are underway. Comment?

Home prices in the Puget Sound housing market showed signs of cooling in July, but sales volumes were on par with the blazing temperatures we saw for much of the month. While the number of closed sales of single-family homes in King County held relatively steady from June to July, there were 266 more closed sales this July than during the same month in 2014, despite there being 1,311 fewer active listings than a year ago, according to statistics from the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. A jury has convicted a Renton man of homicide by watercraft in a fatal boat collision on Lake Washington last year. The Seattle Times reported that a King County jury deliberated for about a day before returning the verdict Tuesday afternoon in the trial of Richard Hicks, 47. The suburban real estate agent was also found guilty of two counts of assault. Comment?

In a special meeting July 15, San Juan County Housing Bank Commission continued work on a 2016 plan to answer a question posed to them by the San Juan County Council: are an increase in vacation rentals having an impact on affordable housing availability countywide? Originally brought up in a May 12 meeting, the council requested the commission look into county statistics to gather a working plan addressing the critical needs of affordable long-term rentals, affordable home ownership opportunities and affordable seasonal worker housing, according to an HBC memorandum.
