Mayor Duke Bennett supports formation of a commission for local government efficiency, and he plans to collaborate with other city and county elected officials to develop a strategy and work out specifics, he said Monday. He had no timelines on when the commission might be formed and begin meeting.
Mayor Duke Bennett is warning of city employee layoffs, including public safety, as well as a reduction in property-tax based services if a trash pickup fee is not adopted by the Terre Haute City Council. The city had a 2015 year-end general fund deficit of over $8 million, and has deficits in other funds, as well.
Twenty business, education and community leaders concerned about Terre Haute's financial challenges want the city's mayor to create a commission to evaluate local government efficiency. The group asked Mayor Duke Bennett in a letter to work with other local elected officials and the private sector to consider ways to make government more efficient "before further taxing our citizens."
