Faced with an affordable-housing crisis, the City of Palo Alto is considering redeveloping the top two floors of City Hall to accommodate micro-unit apartments, under a pilot program proposed by the city's Planning Department. The preliminary plan, details of which have been obtained by the Weekly, would require moving less essential and administrative services to other commercial structures, according to the report, which is an outgrowth of a series of memos between City Manager James Keene and Planning Director Hillary Gitelman.
An early Easter morning blaze in a downtown Palo Alto building that houses city employees only caused smoke and water damage thanks to a quick thinking police officer. "An officer's alertness and quick response from firefighters saved millions of dollars potentially and obviously, in our case, allowed our Development Center to remain unaffected and no impacts to the public," City Manager James Keene said at the City Council meeting on Monday.

The faces of Santa Clara County's homeless residents are getting older, as more seniors are unable to afford the region's skyrocketing rents, members of a panel on homelessness said on Thursday. The panel of experts, which was moderated by Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, spoke during the "Faces of Homelessness in Silicon Valley: Perception versus Reality" luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Community members can chat with Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian about local issues during Simitian's "sidewalk office hours" in Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Saratoga beginning April 2. "I look forward to talking to people one-on-one," Simitian said in an announcement for the event. "Sidewalk office hours give both the public and me a chance to interact in an informal, friendly atmosphere.
