A deal to close out this year's 90-day legislative session on time appeared to be slipping from lawmakers' grasp Friday, with leaders saying they remain in a stalemate over an oil tax and tax credits bill. "It's not moving," said Anchorage Rep. Chris Tuck, the Democratic minority leader, though he added: "It's not dead."
The minority leader of the Alaska House said Wednesday that if his caucus isn't satisfied with changes to the state's oil and gas tax credit program, it will be hard to justify going into a major state savings account to help cover state costs. Minority Leader Chris Tuck, D-Anchorage, said it also would be hard to justify asking people to pay taxes or make changes to the Alaska Permanent Fund dividends without tax credit changes at least on par with what Gov. Bill Walker has proposed.

Legislators want seats - Apr 1, 2016
The House Resources Committee is considering two bills which would add members of the House and Senate to the board of the Alaska Gasline Development Corp. as non-voting members. Senate Bill 125, by Sen. Mia Costello, R-Anchorage, passed the Senate March 23. House Bill 282, by House Speaker Mike Chenault, R-Nikiski, had its first hearing at the March 30 House Resources meeting.
Two Republican lawmakers want to add legislative oversight to the board of an organization that plays a key role in Alaska's natural gas pipeline project development. Both Sen. Mia Costello and House Speaker Mike Chenault have proposed adding two non-voting lawmakers to the board of the Alaska Gasline Development Corp. The state-sanctioned gas line corporation would hold portions of Alaska's interest in the liquefaction facilities.

Anchorage's current mayor is locked in a debate with his predecessors about how much the city's limit on property taxes can grow from year to year, the focus of an initiative on the April 5 city ballot. With Proposition 8, a group led by former Mayor Dan Sullivan is seeking to amend city charter - essentially the city's constitution - and overturn an ordinance passed last fall by the Anchorage Assembly that loosened limits on the growth of the tax cap.

A former Anchorage state senator who cleared the way for Gov. Bill Walker's election in 2014 is now reportedly hoping for an appointment to the same job that propelled former Gov. Sarah Palin to prominence. Democrat Hollis French set aside his campaign for lieutenant governor to allow Walker, a Republican-turned-independent, to form a "unity ticket" with Byron Mallott, then the Democratic candidate for governor and who's now Walker's lieutenant governor.
