Saved from the scrapheap

A NINE-year-old horse that looked destined to end up as dog meat has qualified for the Regional Dressage Championships.

However, owner Claire Talbot only bought the horse she calls 'Ollie' to save him from ending up as pet food.

Claire said: "It was a bit of a project and I certainly didn't expect him to take to dressage so well. When I heard he was going to slaughter I just wanted to save him. He's had a horrible life and was a nervous wreck when I got him. To begin with, even putting a head collar on was a difficult process and he would shake if you went near him with tack.

On busy road, memorial sprouts for friendly horse

The first bouquet popped up two days after Checkers died, wedged into the pasture’s wire fence on Oct. 2. Then the memorial multiplied: wreaths, drawings, cards and small cherub statues woven into the fence.

When McNamara thought the last message had been left, she took it all down. More popped up. Apples dangled from strings. Children left wobbly drawings (“We love you Cekrs”). Letters caught drafts from passing cars, rippled and resettled.

Watch for Poisonous Weeds in Hay

Most weeds are not palatable and will be avoided by pastured livestock if adequate forage is available. However, in hay, most livestock cannot differentiate weeds from beneficial long-stemmed forage, which can result in accidental ingestion and possibly a loss in performance or even death.

Three weeds commonly found in the upper Midwest that remain toxic when dried in hay are hoary alyssum, wild parsnip, and poison hemlock.

Clinton Anderson: Move Your Horse's Hind End

When you control your horse's hindquarters, you control his gas pedal. As he steps his hind legs laterally away from you, his hind end--or engine--is disengaged. The ability to use your body language to yield his hindquarters in this manner is handy when you’re trying to catch him in the stall or pasture. It also sets the stage for disengaging his hindquarters while you’re mounted.
