Free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats in Annadale this weekend

Free rabies vaccinations to dogs and cats will be offered in Annadale this Saturday at the Blue Heron Nature Center, 222 Poillon Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In New York City, rabies is commonly found in bats, raccoons and sometimes rats. Earlier this month, the city vaccinated raccoons in parts of Brooklyn and Queens using a bait carrying the oral rabies vaccine.

Chinese authorities find almost 100 'man-killer' scorpions in parcels sent from Germany

According to the Southern Metropolis Daily , on September 4 staff from the inspection and quarantine bureau were examining a suspicious parcel sent from Germany when they discovered 46 live scorpions inside. Five days later, a similar parcel turned up, this one containing more than 50 anthropods.

Toxic blue-green algae found in Tenmile Lakes

A health advisory is in effect for the Tenmile Lakes south of Reedsport after the Oregon Health Authority reported high levels of toxic blue-green algae in the water. The Oregon Health Authority said exposure can cause numbness, tingling and dizziness that can lead to difficulty breathing or heart problems.

Books So Bad They're Good: Horsing Around

The horse in question was Mr. Ed, the year was 1964, and thanks to me having all the grace and style of a dead bristlecone pine, what should have been a pleasant evening at home for Mum, Dad, our dog Terry, and yours truly turned into a medical emergency. I'm not all that clear on the details - I was all of four, after all - but I'm fairly sure that this was one of the incidents that eventually led my long suffering mother to wail to that it was a good thing she hadn't named me "Grace."
