NATIONAL TRAILS DAY, JUNE 1 NPS and its partners invite the public to roll up their sleeves and participate in National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will be repairing a portion of the Backbone Trail east of Encinal Canyon Road.

Springs Fire threatens rare bird area in Santa Monica Mountains

While the Springs Fire caused minimal damage to man-made structures, it decimated the habitat of two rare bird species and other animals and its timing is likely to lengthen the recovery of the 28,000 scorched acres in the Santa Monica Mountains.
