A woman whose body was found severely burned in Kings Mountain State Park on Sunday was acquainted with another woman found dead in York County in late October, the boyfriend of the most recent victim said.

Cars and trucks parked in the small lot, on the grass and nearly a quarter-mile in each direction along the roadside, all for a look at a square mile of nature that is the new Gateway Trailhead.

Avid hikers, Dr. Paul Hendricks, a Kings Mountain dentist, and his wife, Mary Ann, didn't wait for a formal invitation to start enjoying the new Gateway Trails portion ready for a grand opening Saturday.

Cleveland County is a desirable destination for tourists and retirees. Having traveled in every county in North Carolina and all 50 states, I have not found a county of 100,000 population with more to offer these two groups.

There are images from places as distant as Nicaragua, Morocco, and Peru in The Lost , a new photographic exhibit by Gary Geboy, but there are just as many scenes from around the corner, a few miles down the road, or maybe even right outside the window.

There were no video games, television sets or electronics, but children from past days filled their summers with fun and games nonetheless.
