hey Humboldt Guy, hope you break down next time you go on a trip and get stranded for a night left to your own devices, we'll see if you'll be able to survive.
Sounds like the guys were well prepared and did the right thing. Good job Coast Guard and Sherriff's Department for finding the guys quickly.

I think these guys did a great job, most of the people that go up there and get stranded do not come back alive. We should all be happy that they made it out safely not harshly criticizing them. Great job to the Coast Guard and Sheriff's Department.

Their adventure encourages me. I've always wanted to take a kayak trip from Ruth Dam to Blue Lake. I would like to know where these guys started and how far they got and how long it took them. It must not have been a very good canoe.

Well, it's nice they made it out OK, but I'd lean towards Humboldt Guy's assessment......."unexpec ted rapids", come on, with a little asking around these guys would have easily found out that there are a series of waterfalls on the Mad River in the reach they tried to canoe. Also, if you're not familiar with a reach of river you're running and you hear a loud roaring sound ahead of you........stop, get out and investigate what the F#ck is going on, duh!

seans a dumbass, its true.
ive seen him riding a tandem bicycle wearing whitey tighties and sunglasses.. but he's not an idiot.
i figure leaving too late in the afternoon was his problem. despite the issues they had, they still had the essentials needed to get through the night.
never go out on potawot without the things you need,
and never ride a bike without pants!

They had the foresight to carry waterproof matches and space blankets. They spent a reasonably comfortable night in the woods around a fire and walked out the next day. This story could have been about two canoeist dead from hypothermia or drowning. The difference is knowledge and preparation .
