    Shane McGowan

    Shane McGowan of Amsterdam, New York passed away tragically with his wife and good friends on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the age of 30. Shane was born to Sheila McGarvey and Dr. Randy T. McGowan on March 6, 1988 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He attended local schools graduating from Amsterdam High School in 2006 and went on to attend Sage College where he graduated with his bachelor's degree.

    Man from Staten Island, 68, dies during skydiving jump

    A former Bulls Head resident died Tuesday after suffering a heart ailment during a skydiving jump in California, officials said. Peter Zimmerli, 68, was fine when he jumped out of the plane, but had a medical emergency on the way down, according to a sergeant at the Riverside Coroner's Office.

    A Staten Island woman has channeled her unfathomable pain after losing her husband and child by suicide into the hope of saving another family. Diana Alvaro's husband died 12 years ago, and her child, Christopher, 29, passed away about eight months ago while living in California.

    Shooting of beloved woman, 67, formally deemed homicide

    The fatal shooting of 67-year-old Frances Williams after a gang-related melee near the Staten Island Courthouse in July has formally been classified a homicide, according to police. No arrests have been made and the police investigation continues in the shooting of the beloved New Brighton resident on July 10 at about 12:28 p.m. on the 300 block of Jersey Street a couple of blocks from her home, according to an NYPD statement.

    A swimming pool in the Fitzpatrick family's West Brighton back yard serves as a constant reminder of what they lost when their son took his own life in 2016. Danny Fitzpatrick died on Aug. 11 of that year at the age of 13. His mother Maureen told the Advance the family will never be the same.

    Staten Island's weather prognosticator "Charlotte" the groundhog has died at the age of six from complications of kidney disease, according to a Facebook post by the Staten Island Zoo. Also known as Staten Island Chuck, "Charlotte" was the center of attention every year at the annual Groundhog Day event, where residents would wait in the cold by the masses to see if Spring would come early that year.
