    Courtenay loved other cultures

    Survived by: Husband, John Courtenay; sons, Robert Melendez and daughter-in-law Consuelo; Christian Argonza and daughter-in-law Abigail; Matthew Santiago; and John Courtenay II; daughters, Giovanna Voorhees and son-in-law Perry; and Jasmina Courtenay; brother Phil Melendez; and sisters, Melva Melendez, Hilda Muzquiz, Ostolia Dominguez; and Mary Anderson; mother, Maria Gonzalez Melendez; father, Filemon Melendez; five grandchildren; and 16 nieces and nephews. Elma Courtenay was still a teen when she became an activist, joining in the fight for the rights of farmworkers, influenced by labor activist Cesar Chavez.

Christopher Greicius, 7, served as the inspiration for the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation , which grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.
