    Courtenay loved other cultures

    Survived by: Husband, John Courtenay; sons, Robert Melendez and daughter-in-law Consuelo; Christian Argonza and daughter-in-law Abigail; Matthew Santiago; and John Courtenay II; daughters, Giovanna Voorhees and son-in-law Perry; and Jasmina Courtenay; brother Phil Melendez; and sisters, Melva Melendez, Hilda Muzquiz, Ostolia Dominguez; and Mary Anderson; mother, Maria Gonzalez Melendez; father, Filemon Melendez; five grandchildren; and 16 nieces and nephews. Elma Courtenay was still a teen when she became an activist, joining in the fight for the rights of farmworkers, influenced by labor activist Cesar Chavez.

    St. Joseph's unveils memorial for Make-A-Wish Founda...

    A child who died of leukemia 35 years ago is the subject of a new memorial unveiled Monday inside St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. Christopher Greicius, 7, served as the inspiration for the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation , which grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.

    Vigil set for Logan Heights shooting...

    Coney, 28, was shot in the lower torso during an argument outside a home on Ocean View Boulevard, San Diego homicide investigators said. Witnesses told police a number of males ran away after the gunfire erupted about 9:15 p.m. Medics took Coney to a hospital, where he died.

    Song for Chelsea King released on 5th anniversary

    A legislative-reform agency created in memory of slain Poway High School senior Chelsea King will mark Wednesday's fifth anniversary of her murder by releasing a musical tribute penned by a local singer-songwriter. The tune honoring Chelsea, a straight-A student who died at the hands of an ex-con rapist on Feb. 25, 2010, "will soon become an anthem for our cause," Chelsea's Light Foundation representatives stated in an online posting.

    John Gerard Niehaus, 29, of Danvers, dearly loved son of Jeffrey and Margaret Niehaus, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Monday, February 16, 2015 in his parents' home where John also lived. Born in Danvers, John was mostly home schooled although he attended Dunn Middle School in the eighth grade and St. John's Prep as a freshman.
