Melvin Dummar, who has died aged 74, was a petrol station attendant from Utah who claimed that on a freezing night in December 1967 he had come across an elderly dishevelled man claiming to be the reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes lying in the Nevada desert scrub, and had given him a lift to the back entrance of the Sands Hotel and Casino, next door to the Desert Inn, Las Vegas, where Hughes was living at the time. After Hughes's death in April 1976, a will, purportedly hand-written by the billionaire in 1968, was discovered at the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah.
