    Rockville Centre honors its heroes

    Sister Eileen Marie Koehler dead; former teacher was 96

    Sister Eileen Marie Koehler, 96, dedicated 81 years to the Dominican Sisters of Amityville. A former teacher at schools across Long Island, she died June 10, 2016, after being in poor health for years.

    Florence Hardgrove of Rockville Centre died on June 5, 2016, at the age of 95. A former opera singer, she also was a music teacher for almost 60 years on Long Island.     Idella Harris, entrepreneur, activist and volunteer,...

    Idella Harris, a businesswoman and fervent community activist and volunteer in the Rockville Centre-Lakeiew area for over 50 years, died May 19. She was 99. Harris created two businesses, Idella's Beauty Parlor and Idella Harris Real Estate. "She always said she had a hard time opening up her businesses, and if it wasn't for the Town of Hempstead, she wouldn't be where she was," said Julian Jones, vice chair of the Lakeview Council.
