    Robert Lee Spence Jr., 49, of Pulaski, Va., passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Radford Rehab Center after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Spence Sr.,; maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Bertie Myers; paternal grandparents James and Irene Spence; uncles Joe Myers, Roy Spence and James Buddy Spence; aunts Thelma Bryant, Lena Spence and Joyce Nelson; and a special neighbor, Mark Steele.

    Ralph Derrill Grubb

    He was a member of "The Greatest Generation," having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from September 1943 to November 1945. He flew on 44 missions as a tail gunner on the B-24 in the South Pacific, and witnessed the bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, which was an instrumental event in ending the war.
