    Vernon E. Burton

    Vern, who was known for his wonderful sense of humor and ever-present smile, was born in Omaha, Neb., on June 3, 1924, the only child of John and Vesta Burton. In July 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and sent to Camp Adair, Ore., to a new wartime infantry division - the 70th Infantry "Trailblazer" Division.
