    Memorial to open at site of 2003 fire that killed 10...

    The site of a nightclub fire that killed 100 people in 2003 is reopening Sunday as a memorial park to honour the memories of those who died, the more than 200 people injured and the many people who rushed to help in the minutes, weeks, months and years after the blaze sent shockwaves through this tight-knit state. The memorial for The Station nightclub fire in West Warwick is scheduled to open with a ceremony expected to draw hundreds of people.

    Families of people who died Oakland warehouse fire sue

    Relatives of 18 of the 36 people who died in Oakland's "Ghost Ship" warehouse fire added California's Pacific Gas & Electric utility on Tuesday as a defendant in their wrongful death lawsuits. They claimed the company should have known the warehouse's electrical hookups were hazardous and illegally installed.

    OAKLAND >> T. Gary Rogers, Oakland's ice cream titan who turned Dreyer's Grand into a billion-dollar business, died Tuesday. He was 74. A 45-year Oakland resident, Rogers bought Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream with his partner, William “Rick” Cronk, in 1977 for $1 million.

Known as "Gary" to his family, friends and employees, Mr. Rogers was the chief executive of Dreyer's for 30 years, until after the company was sold to Nestle in 2002.

    Fifteen survivors of the deadly March 27 blaze at 25...

    Fifteen residents who escaped the flames last month in the deadly inferno at a West Oakland halfway house sued the landlords and nonprofits Wednesday, claiming they allowed numerous fire code violations in the deteriorating property that led to the fire. The tenants also seeks damages for the "deplorable, slum-like living conditions" at 2551 San Pablo Ave. before the fire destroyed the three-story building, according to their attorney.
