    Michael Novak, RIP

    I am saddened to learn that Michael Novak has passed away. The American Enterprise Institute, where he was a resident scholar for many years, reports that: Michael was an AEI scholar for three decades until his retirement in 2010, and remained a close friend of the Institute.

    Michael Novak, a Catholic philosopher who helped carve a space for religion in modern politics, diplomacy and economics, arguing that capitalism is the economic system most likely to achieve the spiritual goods of defeating poverty and encouraging human creativity, died Friday at his home in Washington. He was 83. Novak, who spent his formative years in the seminary, was widely recognized as one of the most influential Catholic theologians of his generation.

    Vi" Ahlquist, 94, of Russell, PA., died Wednesday morning, February 8, 2017 at her residence after an illness of the past year and a half. She was a Warren Area resident most of her entire life and had lived 7 years in Findley Lake, N.Y. Vi was a 1940 graduate of Warren High School.

The five-month-old was found to have died on or around December 20 - four or five days after her parents overdosed on fentanyl, according to Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees.

    Charlotte E. Varner, 106, a resident of Christ the King Manor in DuBois, and formerly of Grampian and a long-time resident of Johnstown, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017 at the manor. Mrs. Varner was a school teacher who taught physical education and music.
