    Joseph R. Kachik Sr., a retired Social Security Administration policy writer and avid sports fan, died Monday of complications from pneumonia at the short-term rehabilitation center at the Fairhaven retirement community in Sykesville. The longtime Westminster resident was 93. Joseph Robert Kachik Sr. was born and raised in Johnstown, Pa., where he graduated in 1940 from Johnstown High School.

Jimmy grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, graduated with a BFA from Penn State University in 1964 and served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS William V. Pratt.

    Laurel woman dies from West Nile virus

    This morning the Baltimore VA Medical Center confirmed that Dorothy Mount, a 94-year-old Laurel resident who passed away last week, was a victim of the West Nile virus. The virus is most commonly transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes and, according to the Center for Disease Control, about 1 in 150 of people infected develop severe symptoms, including high fever, headache, tremors, vision loss, and paralysis.
