    In this Jan. 27, 1986 file photo, choreographer Arthur Mitchell, founder of Dance Theatre of Harlem poses in his office at the City Center building in New York. Mitchell, who broke barriers for African-Americans in the 1950s as a ballet dancer with the New York City Ballet and who would go on to become a driving force in the creation of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, died Wednesday at a New York City hospital.

    Franklin D. Groom of Bloomingburg, N.Y., formerly of Goshen, N.Y., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, at Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill, N.Y. He was 81. Son of Warren and Frances Martin Groom, he was born on Jan. 19, 1937, in Middletown, N.Y. He was a driver for Manheim New York, Newburgh, N.Y. He was also a Navy veteran and a die-hard Mets fan. Survivors include his wife, Terry Cooper Groom, at home; son, Steve Groom of Montana; daughters, Margaret Gibson of Schenectady, N.Y., Lori Groom-Hendrick of Pine Bush, N.Y., and Tammy Groom of Bloomingburg; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
