    Miyashiro, co-founder of Cafe 100, dies

    The Waianae, Oahu-born daughter of Okinawan immigrants opened the landmark Hilo restaurant in the Waiakea Town area of Hilo in 1946 with her husband, Richard, who died in 1982. They named it in tribute to the 100th Infantry Battalion, a unit of Hawaii-born Japanese-American soldiers in which Richard Miyashiro served during World War II, when Japanese-Americans faced bigotry at home because of the Pearl Harbor attack.

    DJ 'Phil Abbot' dies at 55

    Phil Miyamoto, a Hilo native who had a long career as a radio personality and programmer in Honolulu and on the mainland died Monday at age 55. Miyamoto, who went by "Phil Abbot" on the air, was morning host and program director at KOOL Gold 107.9 in Honolulu, an oldies station that rose to No. 3 in the Honolulu metro market with Abbot at the helm since February 2012.
