    City pays $1M to settle wrongful death lawsuit

    The city has agreed to pay $1 million to the survivors of a man who died in 2013 after he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by a Honolulu police officer responding to a report that the owner of a stolen pickup truck had located hisvehicle.

    Memorial for former HPD chief Keala set for Thursday

    Memorial services for former Honolulu Police Chief Francis Keala will be held Thursday at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary and National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Keala died of congestive heart failure Jan. 7 at his Honolulu home at the age of 86. He served as police chief from 1969 to 1983.

    Bicyclist killed in crash with van identified

    The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office identified today a 59-year-old man who died after being struck by a van while riding his bicycle as Stanley Simon of Waianae. Simon died Monday night after he was struck at the intersection of Waianae Valley Road and Niihau Street at about 10:50 p.m. Police said Simon ran a stop sign on Niihau Street and entered Waianae Valley Road directly into the path of a Honda van driven by a 53-year-old Waianae man.
