    Ward Hinegardner Shipp, 93, a lifelong resident of Rockingham County, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017. He was born in Rockingham County on Oct. 11, 1923, and was a son of the late Herman A. Shipp Sr. and Effie Mae Hinegardner Shipp.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Forrest Pifer and Ida Marion Cole Pifer; his sister, Lucille Browning and her husband, Joe; and nephew, Gary Browning.

    Man Dies 2 Days After He Was Struck On Highway

    Maryland State Police say a Hagerstown man has died from injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car while walking at night along a state highway near Smithsburg. Police said in a statement Tuesday that 55-year-old Roger Wright died Saturday at a hospital in Baltimore.

    Early in my career as a historian, I spent hours looking through picture files at the National Archives, Library of Congress, Virginia Historical Society and Museum of the Confederacy. One day I came across a photograph of a dead horse, alone on a battlefield.
