    Turner Station celebration to honor the life of Lacks

    Henrietta Lacks Legacy Group president Courtney Speed accepted a proclamation from Gov. Larry Hogan presented by Lyndra Marshall, chairman of the Maryland Commission on African-American History and Culture; Dale Green, vice-chair of the commission, and former chairman Theodore Mack at the Praise Day celebration in 2016. Each year, on the first Saturday in August, residents and friends of the Turner Station community gather to honor the legacy of Henrietta Lacks.

    Louise G. Stephens Vanorsdale

    She was born on Sep. 27, 1928 in Shepherdstown, and was the daughter of the late Ayler Stephens and Agnes Crompton Stephens. She was a crossing guard for 35 years for the students of Sacred Heart of Mary School in Dundalk, Maryland.

    Cassandra "Sandy" Christian, a local bartender recalled as a free spirit with a sympathetic ear, died in her sleep of a heart attack July 6 at her Dundalk home. She was 73. Born in Baltimore and raised in O'Donnell Heights and Pimlico, she was the daughter of James "Mox" Toy, a railroad worker, and his wife, Virginia Parlett Colgan, a nurse at the old St. Joseph's Hospital on Caroline Street.
