Marcus Belgrave, a jazz trumpeter who graced stages and studios with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Cocker and Motown artists galore, died Sunday. He was 78. Thanks to local DJ and music historian Adam Stanfel, we were alerted last night to the fact that the jingle in the much-discussed 'Hilltop' ad, the song "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke," was written by Roquel "Billy" Davis , who worked with Tamla, J-V-B, and Chess, among other local Detroit labels before becoming a highly successful jingle writer for the advertising industry.
