    DeKALB - DeKalb residents and Northern Illinois University retirees Jerrold and Carol Zar lived across the street from retired NIU journalism professor Avi Bass and his family for 35 years. The Zars' children were about the same ages as the Basses' and they were in and out of each other's houses all the time, Carol Zar said.

The former Jeanette Hawthorn was born July 13, 1916 in Hebron, IL the daughter of the late Frank and Floy Hawthorn.

    "Most every Illinois newsroom has somebody who was taught by Jerry," said Maria Krull, who took over as the Northern Star's business adviser during the 1980s, shortly after Thompson had sued Northern Illinois University to keep his job, on grounds of his First Amendment rights. Thompson, somewhat appropriately, died Election Day, Nov. 6, after a long bout with cancer.

    Aurora man gets 10 years for selling fatal heroin to...

    The Aurora drug dealer who sold the fentanyl-laced heroin that led to a Montgomery man's death has accepted a 10-year prison sentence, according to a news release from the DeKalb County State's Attorney's Office. Victor D. Peters, 31, formerly of the 1000 block of Allaire Avenue, pleaded guilty Tuesday to drug-induced homicide.

    Jacob J. Skala

    Jacob James Skala, 80, of DeKalb, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, following a valiant 8-year battle with cancer, at Bethany Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb. Jim graduated with the Class of 1956 from Newman Catholic High School and was a veteran of the Army.
