    As the sun rose above the trees and a gentle wind blew, more than 200 people gathered in a large circle outside Brownstown Central High School. They all remained silent as Michael Goltry, associate minister at Driftwood Christian Church in Vallonia, shared words to help provide comfort as the school mourns the loss of two of its own, freshmen Nevaeh Law and Brittany Watson.

    Community Pulling Together To Cover Funeral Expenses

    As families and friends mourn the deaths of four teenagers killed in a wreck Saturday night in Cortland, the community is coming together to raise money to help cover funeral expenses. Several fundraisers have been set up by individuals and local businesses for people to donate to the families of 14-year-old Jenna Helton, 16-year-old Martin Martinez, both of Seymour, and 14-year-old Nevaeh Law and 15-year-old Brittany Watson both of Brownstown.

    Jackie Watson, mother of Brittany Watson who passed away in car wreck Saturday, comforts Madaline Kerkhof, sister of Naveh Law, during a prayer vigil at Seymour High School for the four victims in Saturday's fatal crash in Cortland. Seymour mother Torre Collins wants people to hug their children tight and hold them close because in an instant they might be gone.

    Auction raises money for cancer awareness event

    The organizer of the largest annual event in this small southwestern Jackson County community rarely misses a chance to recruit another volunteer to help promote cancer awareness. Debra Wayman's newest recruits include a 34-year-old Brownstown woman who survived a bout of bladder cancer in 2010 and a Salem couple who have lost several members of their family to cancer.

    Melba Mae Darlage, age 76, of Seymour, passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2018, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Mrs. Darlage was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Sauers, where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years and a member of the Sauers Ladies Aid.

    William Addison "Bill" Richmond Visalia - William Addison "Bill" Richmond passed away July 15, 2018 at Magnolia Assisted Living in Visalia, where he had been in full nursing care since May. The oldest of three, Bill was born on January 12, 1935 in Brownstown, Indiana to his parents William Lynn Richmond and Lucille Clapesattle. He moved frequently as a young man because of his Navy father turned minister.

    Brownstown dentist retires after 42 years of service

    Nearly two months ago, a Jackson County dentist felt it was the right time to hang up his drill after a dental career that spanned more than four decades. Dr. Max Middendorf of Brownstown began his career as a dentist in the 1970s in Columbus and served patients from various communities in southern Indiana.
