    The first time Patricia Cocalis walked into the grand jury room in 1972, jurors applauded to show their acceptance of the first woman to be hired as an assistant state attorney in Broward County . Retired Broward Circuit Judge Patricia Cocalis continued to help blaze a trail for women lawyers during her long legal career, winning election to the county bench in 1976 before being elevated to the circuit court in 1981.

    Yonkers-born William Dickerson has made three award-winning independent films, among them "Detour," and "The Mirror," but none are as close to his heart as his latest, "No Alternative." The movie, which was shot in various parts of Southern Westchester, is an extension of the novel of the same name that was published in 2012.

    Jo Ann Hertlein, 69, dies

    Jo Ann Hertlein, 69, of Bronxville, N.Y., daughter of the late Anna and Joseph Stivala, died after a battle with cholangiocarcinoma on Dec. 17, 2016. She was born and raised in Scranton, Pa., before moving to Bronxville upon her marriage.
