    Earl "Bunny" Cecil Guthrie, Jr., 69, of Conover,N.C., passed away, Friday, December 1, 2017 at Catawba Regional Hospice of Sherrills Ford. Born in Catawba County on February 7, 1948, he was the son of the late Earl "Rabbit" Cecil Guthrie, Sr., and Louise Wise Guthrie.

    Dr. Joseph Arthur Browde, Sr.

    Dr. Joseph Arthur "Joe" Browde, Sr., 85, previously of Boone, N.C., passed away Tuesday morning, November 07, 2017, at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, N.C. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Browde was an Associate Professor of Education and Chairman of the Department of Education at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. He also taught at the University of North Carolina , Greensboro College, and Columbia College in S.C. He received his Doctorate in Education from Syracuse University and bachelors degree in history from Rutgers University. He was also a graduate of the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

    Musical Chair-ity event honors Macie Pietrowicz, ben...

    A massive game of musical chairs at Valle Crucis Community Park will raise money for OASIS, a nonprofit organization that serves survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The event, sponsored by Mast General Store and Coca-Cola Consolidated of Boone, takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. Titled "Macie Moon's Musical Chair-ity Event," the day also honors Macie Dove Pietrowicz, who died in August 2016 in the fire that destroyed the Valle Landing complex.

Born in Radford, Va., he was preceded in death by his father, Sherman Luther Lester; his mother, Nannie Pernie Weddle Lester; an older brother, Ray, and his wife of 65 years, Erline Kegley Lester.
