    Trailblazing American Indian education leader in Min...

    Aitken-whose name in Ojibwemowin means "one who walks alone"-blazed a trail for American Indian educators and leaders who have gone on to earn well-regarded positions in Minnesota and Bemidji-area academia and higher education. He helped establish the Leech Lake Tribal College, which now boasts nearly 1,000 graduates, and the University of Minnesota Duluth's American Indian Learning Resource Center, a progenitor for the American Indian Resource Center at Bemidji State University.

    Joanne Kay Miller

    She was active in Civic Groups, Chamber of Commerce in Minnesota, an avid bridge player and golfer; and was a successful business owner for many years. Joanne is survived by her husband, Fay A. Miller of Gulf Shores; daughter, Lori L. Silverman of Portland, OR; sons, Richard Miller of Tipp City, OH and Robert A. Miller of Brewster, NY; grandchildren: Nessa Miller, MD, Derrick Miller, Taavy Miller and Erin Shaw; sister, Gayle Myhre of Bemidji, MN; other loving relatives and friends.

    Haugen, Andie Roy

    Andie Roy Haugen Andie Roy Haugen, of Bemidji, MN and formerly of McHenry, IL, suddenly passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, age of 77. Andie truly will be missed by his wife of 51 years, Kathy and their children, Andrea Kujava and Erica Ellicson; four grandsons, Hunter and Tristan Kujava and Kaiden and Kolton Ellicson; his sisters, Karen Johnson and Linda Blessing. Andie was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Norma Haugen; brother-in-law, Ralph Johnson; and granddaughter, Nevaeh Ellicson.

    Inmate dies in Beltrami County Jail

    A 27-year-old man died Sunday in the Beltrami County Jail from an "unknown medical condition," officials said Tuesday, Sept. 4. Hardel H. Sherrell, of Apple Valley, Minn., "collapsed and became unresponsive" at approximately 4:58 p.m., according to a release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.
