Heckler, an eight-term Republican congresswoman from Massachusetts who later became an embattled secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services under President Ronald Reagan before serving as U.S. ambassador to Ireland, died Aug. 6 at a hospital in Arlington, Va. She was 87. Throughout much of her career, Heckler was a groundbreaking figure who often forged her way in law and politics as one of the few women in the male-dominated fields.

    Margaret Miller died peacefully in the presence of her daughters Marjorie and Sarah July 22, 2018, near Camden, where she had been living a full and engaged life at the Quarry Hill assisted living facility for the previous four years. Peg was active to the end, dining with her family out by the town harbor and on Sarah's deck the two evenings prior to her sudden death at the Pen Bay Medical Center from respiratory failure.

    Mill Valley landscape architect Michael Painter, who re-envisioned Doyle Drive into the new Presidio Parkway that thousands of Marin commuters use daily, died of cancer at his home on June 29. He was 83. Mr. Painter worked on the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy and helped reshape San Francisco's Great Highway, but arguably his most noted work was the concept of the new Presidio Parkway, which opened in 2015, born out of the demolition of seismically challenged Doyle Drive. Born in Los Angeles, Mr. Painter grew up near Pasadena and attended UC Berkeley, receiving a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture in 1956.
