    The Caucus of African American Leaders has announced an effort to honor the victims of the Capital Gazette attack with an Annapolis memorial. Caucus convener Carl Snowden said the goal is to raise about $70,000 for a physical monument in memory of Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters, who were killed during the June 28 shooting.

Ms. Winters was killed along with 4 other Capital Gazette journalists on Thursday, June 28, 2018 in a mass shooting at the paper.

    I could tell you that Rob Hiaasen would have been far better suited than I am to listen, console and maybe even advise those left behind. Or I could describe Gerald Fischman as a thoughtful, quiet man who would have written so much more effectively of our grief and gratitude.

    A man charged with slaying five people at a Maryland newspaper sent three letters on the day of the attack, police said, including one that said he was on his way to the Capital Gazette newsroom with the aim "of killing every person present."
