Pens' payment promises bright future for Hill District

For decades, the Pittsburgh Penguins made hockey history at the Civic Arena, the team's storied home that separated Downtown from the Hill District. The Penguins have since moved to a new home nearby at the Consol Energy Center, but they haven't forgotten their roots at that hallowed site in the Lower Hill.

Mackey: Kuhnhackl's connection; Pens prospects drop finale

Which is why it should come as no surprise that, at a retirement party for former NHL player Marco Sturm over the summer, Penguins prospect Tom Kuhnhackl got the opportunity to introduce himself to a few fellow Germans in the organization - forward Marcel Goc and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff . "I walked down to the locker room after the game," Kuhnhackl explained.

Yohe: 10 Pens observations entering camp

The Penguins have been working out informally for the past couple of weeks at Consol Energy Center and Southpointe, respectively. Attendance has been strikingly good, as almost every player on the roster has worked out during this stretch, perhaps a good indication of how hungry this team is and how much the players wish to please the new coaching staff.

Penguins' top goaltending prospects will move to back seat soon

When the Penguins prospects' optional practice ended Monday, coach John Hynes still hadn't decided who will be in goal for their tournament finale today at Budweiser Gardens. But regardless of whether he chooses Matt Murray or Tristan Jarry - or decides to have them split the game - this much is certain: Whoever plays likely will be getting his final opportunity to impress coaches and management in a game situation this fall.

More mature J.T. Miller will compete for Rangers' No. 3 center spot

Rangers center J.T. Miller looks on against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second period of Game 3 of a second-round layoff hockey series at Madison Square Garden on Monday, May 5, 2014. With veteran center Brad Richards bought out and now a member of the Blackhawks, and the Rangers set on the first and second lines with centers Derek Stepan and Derick Brassard, a pivotal roster question is whether J.T. Possession and Scoring Chances

The NHL tracks a good deal of information that isn't readily available to the public, such as shot distance, shot type, and even relative shot location. It is all information that can be found, but it usually wasn't available in an easily accessible database.

NHL or Sweden for Oskar Sundqvist this year?

"He's been impressive," said John Hynes, who is coach of the Penguins ' minor league team in Wilkes-Barre and who is running their bench in this tournament. Sundqvist's size -- he is 6 feet 3, 209 pounds -- is an obvious asset; his wingspan is especially valuable when killing penalties and playing in his defensive zone.

NHL Is A Better League With A Healthy Sidney Crosby

"Sid the Kid" came into the league as the "Next One" and an heir apparent to Wayne Gretzky in 2005; he has not only lived up to the hype, but in many ways exceeded it. The only thing that has kept Crosby down is his unfortunate run of injuries, something that is hopefully behind him.

Crosby: Pens must 'find a way to get over that hump'

While just about every team gives lip service to their quest for Stanley Cups, there are generally only a select few who can look at a season as "championship or bust." The Pittsburgh Penguins have been in that group for some time, so maybe it makes sense that they canned Dan Bylsma and Ray Shero after a second-round exit.
