Cult of Hockey: Big Yak should push Draisaitl for job on the OIlers

Almost certainly one big young rookie centre is going to make the Edmonton Oilers this October, but it's increasingly clear that there will be stiff competition for that job. Skilled and lanky Bogdan Yakimov followed up a strong development camp in Jasper with a sensational game against the Calgary Flames rookies on Saturday night in the Okanagan Young Guns tournament.

This year's Oilers rookies don't dazzle

In terms of sheer star power, this year's Edmonton Oilers rookie roster doesn't quite dominate the marquee like it did in the days of Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov. But while this edition lacks the sizzle of a first pick overall, it is unquestionably deeper and better than any crop of Oilers prospects in decades.

Cult of Hockey: Why we should be bullish about Mark Arcobello of the Oilers

If you think "second-line centre" is the same as a two-way skater who plays the second toughest competition in the second most difficult situations, the Oil have no one to fill that bill. Indeed, you can forget about having that kind of second-line centre for a few years until Leon Draisaitl hits his stride as a pro.
